Signing Bonus Information

One of the more common comments made about Jeffrey Lurie's tenure as owner is that the team does not have the money to sign top players, more specifically the up-front dollars in signing bonus money paid when the contract is signed. To examine the "cash-poor" label the Eagles often get stuck with, I've decided to compile the signing bonuses paid by the Eagles via free agent & rookie signings, as well as contract extensions. If you wish, you can compare the bonuses to those paid by other teams to their players using the USA Today salary numbers (see front page) and make your own decision as to how the Eagles compare.

Notes: "est" indicates that the amount was estimated based on the USA Today salary figures & length on contract. One exception to this is Jermaine Mayberry; using this estimation, Mayberry was paid a $2.65 million signing bonus for being the #25 player selected, more than Mamula recieved for being the #9 overall player selected in the draft. The $1.4 million reported when he was signed seemed more accurate. I also suspect that the USA Today yearly "bonus" figures may include incentive bonuses paid out after the season was over.

Cap cost: signing bonus money is "pro-rated" over the length of the contract, meaning that the cost of the bonus to the cap per year is the amount of the bonus divided by the length of the contract. If a player is cut/released, the entire remainder of the "prorated" bonus counts against the team's cap for that year. If a player retires, he must return the remaining "prorated" amount of the bonus money to the team; thus, there are no prorated bonus cap costs for players who retire. Incentive bonuses are not prorated, but are counted as "salary" under the cap; for example, Andy Harmon's 'roster bonus' in 1995 was not prorated, but counted as salary paid in '95.
