Signing Bonus Information

This is a collection of signing bonuses paid to top draft picks over the past few years; it gives some indication of both how bonuses have increased over time, as well as a ballpark idea of how much a player picked at a particular slot in the draft can expect to recieve as a signing bonus.

Cap cost: signing bonus money is "pro-rated" over the length of the contract, meaning that the cost of the bonus to the cap per year is the amount of the bonus divided by the length of the contract. If a player is cut/released, the entire remainder of the "prorated" bonus counts against the team's cap for that year. If a player retires, he must return the remaining "prorated" amount of the bonus money to the team; thus, there are no prorated bonus cap costs for players who retire. Incentive bonuses are not prorated, but are counted as "salary" under the cap.
